Porter’s Liquid Copper and Patina Green are used together to recreate copper with the green patination of age. The oxidisation effect that the Patina Green has on the Liquid Copper allows you to create your own authentic aged copper lamp bases, candlesticks, mirror frames and garden ornaments.

Not suitable for “high traffic” surfaces such as handrails, door knobs etc as continued touching of the surface will remove green patina effect.
The green patina effect can be delicate, and the application of clear coats or finishes over the green patina effect will remove some or all the finish, and this can leave the Liquid Copper visible without the Patina Green finish. We recommend that Liquid Copper & Patina Green be left to weather naturally.
On exterior surfaces, be mindful that green patina stains (caused by run-off) may appear on adjacent surfaces.
Porter’s Liquid Copper can be used on its own, without the application of Patina Green. Please note that the copper particles will react to moisture and finger marks. On exterior applications a subtle green patina will develop naturally over time. On interior applications, continued touching of the copper surface can leave dark fingerprints.
Do not apply in high humidity, below 10°c or above 30°c.
Please Note: Liquid Copper treated with Patina Green is a chemical reaction. Individual results may vary due to film thickness, methods used, time elapsed, ambient temperatures, substrate etc.
Previously painted surfaces with loose, peeling or flaking paint must be made sound by scraping off loose paint. Fill nail holes and cracks with suitable filler, sand and dust off. Spot prime all joints and repaired areas with Porter’s Prepare & Prime, then apply 1 or 2 coats of same to entire area. Touch dry 20 minutes. Allow 2 hours dry time before overcoating.
Substrate should be a clean well-held surface free from loose material, dirt, grease, oil and mould. Dust down before proceeding. On bare surfaces such as new unpainted plasterboard sheeting, or timber, spot prime all joints and repaired areas with Porter’s Prepare & Prime, then apply 1 or 2 coats of same to entire area. Touch dry 20 minutes. Allow 2 hours dry time before overcoating.
On new unpainted fresh set plaster do not proceed until plaster has thoroughly set and has dried completely. Firstly, apply 1 coat Porter’s Mineral Silicate Primer by brush or roller. Touch dry 20 minutes. Allow 2 hours dry time. Then apply by brush, roller or spray 1 coat Porter’s Prepare & Prime. Touch dry 20 minutes. Allow 2 hours dry time before overcoating.
On bare masonry surfaces such as, render or brick, spot prime all repaired areas with Porter’s Limeproof Undercoat Sealer, then apply 1 coat of same to entire area by brush, medium nap roller or spray. Touch dry in 1 hour. Allow 6 hours dry time before recoating or over-coating.
On bare metallic surfaces, apply one to two coats of Porter’s Universal Primer. Touch dry 2 hours. Recoat 6 hours. Allow to dry 24 hours.
APPLYING LIQUID COPPER:
Stir thoroughly prior to use as this ensures an even distribution of copper particles. Apply two coats by brush. Touch dry in 2 hours. Allow minimum 12 hours dry time between coats.
APPLYING PATINA GREEN:
Caution: Please always wear rubber gloves and safety goggles (refer to Patina Green SDS prior to use). When the second coat of Porter’s Liquid Copper is touch dry*, lightly apply by brush one coat of Porter’s Patina Green. Patination and oxidization will begin to develop within hours and will continue to increase over the next 12 hours. To increase intensity of green patina effect, additional coats may be applied, however, please note that the green patina is delicate, and brushing on further coats can remove or change the initial patination. Allow each application to dry thoroughly (minimum 3 hours) before applying additional coats.
*For best results apply Patina Green when Liquid Copper is touch dry, and it must be applied within 12 hours of the Liquid Copper being touch dry. This is because the longer the Liquid Copper is left to dry the harder the paint resins will become, and the Patina Green will take longer to react with the copper particles.
Please Note: Liquid Copper treated with Patina Green is a chemical reaction. Individual results may vary due to film thickness, methods used, time elapsed, ambient temperatures, substrate etc.
