Product specification
Precautions and limitations

When painted onto “high traffic” surfaces such as hand rails, door knobs etc continued touching of the surface will remove the verdigris effect. The verdigris effect can be delicate and will be damaged under such circumstances.
Porter’s Liquid Bronze and Bronze Verdigris will continue to oxidise after initial application. On exterior surfaces, be mindful that oxidisation stains (caused by run-off) may appear on adjacent surfaces.

Surface preparation
Previously painted surface

On new unpainted fresh set plaster do not proceed until plaster has thoroughly set and has dried completely. Firstly, apply 1 coat Porter&rsquo ; s Mineral Silicate Primer by brush or roller. Touch dry 20 minutes. Allow 2 hours dry time. Then apply by brush, roller or spray 1 coat Porter&rsquo ; s Prepare & ; Prime. Allow 2 hours dry time before recoating or overcoating with top coat.

On bare masonry surfaces such as, render or brick, spot prime all repaired areas with Porter’ s Limeproof Undercoat Sealer, then apply 1 coat of same to entire area by brush, medium nap roller or spray. Touch dry in 1 hour. Allow 6 hours dry time before recoating or over-coating.

On bare metallic surfaces apply 1 or 2 coats of Porter’ s Universal Primer. Touch dry 2 hours. Recoat 6 hours. Allow to dry 24 hours. On plastic, apply two coats of Porter’ s Universal Primer. Touch dry 2 hours. Recoat 6 hours. Allow to dry 24 hours.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SUBTRATES:
Previously painted surfaces with loose, peeling or flaking paint must be made sound by scraping off loose paint. Fill nail holes and cracks with suitable filler, sand and dust off. Spot prime all joints and repaired areas with Porter’ s Prepare & Prime, then apply one coat to entire area. Touch dry 20 minutes. Allow 2 hours dry time before overcoating.

Unpainted surfaces

NEW/UNPAINTED SUBSTRATES:
Substrate should be a clean well-held surface free from loose material, dirt, grease, oil and mould. Dust down before proceeding. On bare surfaces such as new unpainted plasterboard sheeting, or timber, spot prime all joints and repaired areas with Porter’s Prepare & Prime, then apply 1 or 2 coats of same to entire area.

How to apply
Brush, Roller

Do not apply in high humidity, below 10°c or above 30°c. Do not apply in areas subject to ponding. Do not apply paint if Relative Humidity is above 85% or temperature is within 3°C of Dew Point.
Do not apply if the surface temperature is greater than 40°C or below 10°C, or likely to fall below 10°C during the application or drying period.

Stir Liquid Bronze thoroughly prior to use, and occasionally during use.
Apply a minimum of two* coats by brush, roller or spray. Touch dry in 30 minutes. Allow minimum 6 hours dry time between coats. Please note that the application method (i.e. brush, roller or spray) can affect the way your Liquid Bronze finish appears upon completion. This is due to the textures that are created by the application tools and some experimentation is advised prior to proceeding with large areas. Although artistic skill is not required to get a great effect with this product, artists will enjoy creating interesting effects and experimenting with application tools and methods.
* The number of coats applied can vary, (though we recommend a minimum of two), depending upon the extent of the burnishing/polishing planned. Bear in mind, for example, that a gentle hand burnishing with 000 steel wool will barely remove any of the finish, compared to mechanical sanding, which can remove the equivalent to almost a coat of paint.

APPLYING BRONZE VERDIGRIS:
Note: Bronze Verdigris contains hydrochloric acid, so please always wear rubber gloves and safety goggles (refer to separate Duspec datasheet and SDS for Bronze Verdigris).
Bronze Verdigris can be applied 24 hours after the last coat of Liquid Bronze. Lightly apply by brush one or two coats of Porter’s Bronze Verdigris. Allow minimum 3 hours dry time between coats. Verdigris appearance will begin to develop within hours and will continue to increase over the next 12 hours. To increase intensity of verdigris effect, up to three coats may be applied. Please Note: Liquid Bronze treated with Bronze Verdigris is a chemical reaction. Individual results may vary due to film thickness, methods used, time elapsed, ambient temperatures, substrate etc.

BURNISHING OR POLISHING THE FINISH:
Burnishing or polishing the finish after the application of the Bronze Verdigris is optional, and will create a subtle change in the final finish, where a slight shine is visible through the verdigris. Best results are achieved if the Liquid Bronze (with or without Bronze Verdigris) is left to dry and harden for 24 hours, as a hardened, cured finish is easier to burnish than one that is still slightly soft. Experimentation on a test panel is highly recommended, as abrading the surface will remove the verdigris finish to reveal the polished bronze. Varying effects will be achieved according to the application tool used to apply the Liquid Bronze, for example, if a roller is used to apply the Liquid Bronze, once burnished, creates a subtle, authentic cast bronze effect. Imagine viewing the surface microscopically, where the burnishing removes and polishes the tops of the “mountains”, while the verdigris finish remains untouched in the “valleys”. There is no standard method or fixed result when at the burnishing/polishing stage – be artistic and experimental and create your own unique finish.
Burnishing: Allow finish to dry for a minimum of 24 hours before burnishing or polishing. Always wear a dust mask, safety goggles and gloves. For best results Liquid Bronze should be polished mechanically with a 1000-1500 grade sanding discs.

SEALING AFTERWARDS:
If a clear sealer is required, we recommend Porter’s Stucco Wax, although it must be noted that this will change and darken the final result. Perhaps do a small sample board first to check the result before sealing your main project. Allow the Bronze Verdigris to react and dry for at least 48 hours prior to sealing. This can be used either internally or externally. If used externally or in high traffic areas, reapply every 6-12 months.
