A tough all-purpose primer for use when extra masking or isolation of substrate is required, such as over oil-based (enamel) paints when changing to a water-based (acrylic) system, or for timber prone to tannin bleed. Particularly suitable for use over galvanised iron.

Not suitable for use over non-ferous metals such as unpainted stainless steel, brass, copper or bare aluminium.
Does not inhibit rust. Not suitable for use over previously oiled timbers. Universal Primer gives a very smooth finished result, and subsequently is not suitable for use under a number of Porter’s products (that require a rougher, more absorbent undercoat) such as Milk Paint, Lime Wash, Interno, Boncote Cement Paint, Distemper and Fresco.
Do not apply in high humidity, below 10°c or above 30°c.
OVER PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES:
Scrape off loose and flaking paint. Fill nail holes and cracks with suitable filler, sand and dust off. If previous paint is a gloss or semi-gloss finish, lightly sand entire surface to abrade and provide a “key” for the primer. Spot prime all joints and repaired areas.
ON UNPAINTED TIMBER PRONE TO TANNIN BLEED:
Ensure surface is clean and sanded. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove any dust. Apply 1 coat of Porter’s Tannin Check. Allow to dry 2 hours before applying 1 or 2 coats of Porter’s Universal Primer.
OVER METAL OR WEATHERED GALVANISED IRON:
Use a wire brush to remove any loose or flaking paint or any unstable rust, rinse well with water and allow to dry. Universal Primer does not inhibit rust, so the application of an anti-corrosive metal primer or a rust converter may be advisable. New galvanised iron is supplied with an oil film on it which is normally left to weather before painting. If immediate painting is required the oil must be removed. Use an alkaline degreaser or clean surface thoroughly using hot water, sugar soap and a scouring pad. Rinse well and allow to completely dry.
Porter’s Universal Primer is recommended for use as a primer/undercoat prior to the application of Porter’s Alchemy Liquid Silver.
Mineral Silicate Primer (coverage 10m² per litre) is recommended for priming new set plaster before undercoating.
ON NEW UNPAINTED FRESH SET PLASTER:
Do not proceed until plaster has thoroughly set and has dried completely. Firstly, apply 1 coat Porter’s Mineral Silicate Primer by brush or roller. Touch dry 20 minutes. Allow 2 hours dry time. Then apply by brush, roller or spray 1 coat Porter’s Limeproof Undercoat Sealer. Touch dry 2 hours. Allow 6 hours dry time
Do not apply paint if Relative Humidity is above 85% or temperature is within 3°C of Dew Point.
Do not apply if the surface temperature is greater than 30°C or below 10°C, or likely to fall below 10°C during the application or drying period.
Stir thoroughly prior to use. Apply one or two coats by brush or medium nap roller. On bare timber spot prime all knots prior to application. Touch dry in 2 hours. Allow minimum 6 hours dry time between coats. Allow 24 hours dry time before over-coating. Porter’s Universal Primer will reach maximum cure and hardening up to a week after painting.
